Property Information

Located in Thunder Bay, Tapiola Outdoor Education Centre is 13 acres of boreal beauty with fields, forests and streams. We provide a place to connect with nature, learn, and experience the outdoors. Tapiola gets its name from the Finnish national epic poem called the Kalevala, which describes the enchanted realm of Tapio, the ruler of the forests.

Keewaytinook Okimakanak Land Based Learning

Keewaytinook Okimakanak is the main tenant for on the property and provides Indigenous land-based programming at Tapiola.   It centres on respect, reciprocity, reverence, humility and responsibility as values connected to the land through Indigenous knowledges. It is about learning from the land and understanding our connection to it. It includes both a physical connection and spiritual connection. The programming aims to provide First Nations a place to reconnect, learn, and heal using

traditional teachings, activities, and practices.

Tapiola Wildlings

Tapiola Wildlings provides nature based programming for children and families every Friday at Tapiola. The play based forest program is interwoven with a balance of engaging games, crafts, skill-building and Waldorf inspired arts. Tapiola provides an environment where children develop a sense of self, engage in active risky play and foster personal and relational wellbeing.

Bushcraft Skills for Kids

Bushcraft education for kids is every Friday from 1:30-3pm. Past themes have included: fire building, flintknapping, knot tying, shelter building, wood chopping, forest obstacle course, whittling, foraging, archery, animal tracks & signs, tree identification, compass & maps, snaring, outdoor games, and more. Ideal for ages 5-12, but all ages welcome. There is no cost to participate, but please RSVP if planning to attend. This is a volunteer led event, and open to other volunteer support or skill showcasing.
